Es-Sense is a charming natural soap and product store in the German Colony Neighborhood of Jerusalem on Rechov Rachel Immenu 6. I have passed this store many times and never thought of going inside. I didn’t even know what kind of store it was. From afar, I saw a little store with a door with a pretty little garden. I later found out that this little store is quite a jewel, and I am writing about it so that others can discover it as well. Es-Sense sells natural products i.e.: soaps, spa products, massage creams and candles, body creams, face creams and other wonderful products.
I was immediately enchanted upon entering the store. First, the aroma and smell in the air was delicious. A large glass bowl filled with chocolate chip cookies welcomed me. I took one and was about to take a bite. It’s good thing that I didn’t because it was entirely made of soap. The cookies looked good enough to eat!
As I walked around the shop, I saw many other products that looked like food but in reality were not. There was a fruit platter with dates, nuts, apricots, and prunes looking exactly like a fruit platter I received for Tu Bishvat, the Jewish New Year for Trees.
Along one side of the store were many fruits and vegetables that had the exact shape and color and even the smell of real fruit. Corn, Zucchini, Oranges, Star Fruit, Apples, and more. This was truly amazing! I asked how the owners managed to capture the smell and almost exact replica. This is how they do it. They take the fruit and vegetables and make molds from them. The soap, with an appropriate essence is molded from the shape of the fruit or vegetable.
The idea behind Essense’s store developed from the Aurit and Shai’s own personal experiences.Their daughter was born with Pervasive Development Disorder. Like other special needs children, she wasn’t surviving in the Jerusalem’s regular school system. Aurit and Shai decided to take her out and put her in an art school where she did remarkably better. From her and their learning experiences of children with special needs, they decided to open a store and business who would help other special needs children with difficulties.
In addition to this fabulous store, Aurit and Shai own an ES-Sense factory in the Agricultural High school of Ein Kerem. Students, some of whom are autistic from the ages of 14-17, learn from start to finish how to create and produce soaps, natural oils, and all the other products that Es-Sense makes. Most of the products that are sold in the store are made by these children from this school. A large portion of the sales of the products supports the program so that more students can benefit from this great service. Two hundred students a year use these projects for their Bogrut.
